During the second semester of my year-long photojournalism course, my professor, Craig Melvin, asked us to create our own “newspapers” using the weekly photos he had us capture around campus. There was one catch: we’d elect two editors and then the editors would build their own teams. The objective each week was to pool together our photos and create the most attractive “paper” while making the two-hour deadline. As one of the two editors, I strategically chose my team and then delegated. I came up with our name, “Snapshot,” and began work on InDesign. We wound up producing several colorful and inconsistent versions of Snapshot. We tried something new each week, chose different jobs each week and, with a couple of versions, I barely had any say in the design work at all.
Here’s a taste of what I can produce in two hours, whilst leading a team and trying to teach them what I know of the ins and outs of InDesign: Snapshot3, Snapshot4 (PDFs)
Many thanks to my awesome team: Mark Belcher, Tim Crino, Bobbi Hassett, Caitlin McClare and Daulton Sherwin. Mark and Daulton produced stellar images, Tim designed several pages, Bobbi helped with layout and Caitlin worked with Daulton on Photoshop.
